Arba Minch - Crocodiles and Hippos Up Close! February 27

Awoke this morning to the prayer call – I thought we had left that behind – and desperately wanted a coffee – ended up sitting in front of the coffee machine for about 45 minutes waiting for one! Then we sat outside at a table and tried to order breakfast – lots of other riders were already having problems in this area! Eventually it arrived – not exactly what we had ordered – but it worked out – just took ages! The riders on the table next to us were getting rather angry about their order – it was a bit of a pain but managed to get through it!

I am now just trying to organize a trip to the lake I want to see the hippos, crocodiles and pelicans. I have asked around to see who is interested – I think there are just 4 of us going. Just getting changed and then will be ready to go! ………..

Later:

After much discussion we finally got in a taxi and drove for about 20 minutes – turned out this was just to pick up our tickets – then we returned to where we had started and our guides got out, told us to pay up front and they weren’t coming with us. All seemed rather strange but at this stage just wanted to get on with it – so we paid our money. We were then driven off road in a mini van to the lake, where we got in a little tin boat and set off across the lake. After a couple of minutes a hippo’s head rose out of the water in front of us – pretty amazing! Then we turned the corner to see an area they called the crocodile farm – not so much a farm as an area just full of crocodiles! There is a huge one sitting on the bank that we see first, going closer and closer – past a bunch more hippos. There were also loads of pelicans, storks and other birds. Then our guide cuts the engine and moves us closer to the crocodiles – a big one splashes around at the side of us and then ducks underneath the boat – everybody jumps and we are all standing in the middle of the boat – nobody wants to be near the edge! We then float closer towards a rock and are just metres away from a monster crocodile – just sitting there gazing with his mouth wide open!! Amazing to be so close! We then made our way back towards the hippos – there was one with his mouth open resting his jaws on the back of another! The trip was really good!

I then returned to my room to get myself organized for tomorrow – and am just about to head off to use the internet and send you all these files!

It has been a good rest day – though I haven’t eaten much. Hopefully in town I will be able to eat, use the internet, then eat again before returning for an early night! My room is now fairly organized – as I said all in all a good day!

By the way – just checked my bike over – it seems fine. The bike is amazing – the last day was pretty rough – just bouncing away. The wheels Roswell Bikes built have been great – still straight – and the bike overall seems to be in good condition. It’s a lovely bike to ride – fairly fast – did notice the difference when I put my heavy tyres and inner tubes on – but at least they make me feel confident that they are tougher than most so hopefully that will help on the terrain ahead!

7 days of riding before the next update I would imagine – we cross over into Kenya on Thursday!!
